One person died following a car crash on West Mercer Way on Friday morning.
At about 6:45 a.m. on Sept. 1, a major collision occurred in the 2400 block of West Mercer Way, involving two vehicles and serious injuries.
The driver of a stolen vehicle, with one passenger, was traveling at a high rate of speed when he collided with another vehicle near Southeast 24th Street and West Mercer Way, according to the Mercer Island Police Department’s Jennifer Franklin. Both cars ran off the road.
The sole occupant of the victim vehicle died from the impact. The victim was later identified as Solomon Johnson, 21. A memorial fund on a GoFundMe page has been set up to support Johnson’s family and his wife, Candace.
“If you had the privilege of knowing Solomon, you will know that are not enough words to give his life and his imprint on this world justice. Solomon was truly the kind of person who, whether he knew you for 5 minutes or 15 years, could make you feel like the most important person in the world,” Ed Holmes wrote on the page.
The family will post updates, including a date for a memorial and other details.
The driver of the stolen vehicle was taken into custody on investigation of vehicular homicide, and his passenger was transported to the hospital. One of the suspects fled the scene, but was quickly apprehended by the MIPD.
The Mercer Island Fire Department and Bellevue Fire Medics were involved with on-scene treatment.
The intersection was shut down for several hours during the investigation. Police advised drivers to use alternate routes.
