Thief snatches purse at French-American School | Mercer Island Police Blotter

A woman’s purse was stolen out of an unlocked Mercedes at the French-American School while the woman was away from her vehicle for five minutes.

A woman’s purse was stolen out of an unlocked Mercedes at the French-American School in the 3700 block of East Mercer Way while the woman was away from her vehicle for five minutes at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 21. The purse contained a check from the Fairmount Hotel for the victim’s business, credit cards, makeup, vehicle keys and a wallet.

March 19

Fraud: $800 was charged to a North end man’s Wells Fargo credit card online.

March 20

Bike recovered: A woman found a bicycle in her yard in the 4200 block of 89th Avenue S.E., south of Mercer Island High School, at 3:30 p.m. No neighbors claimed it and the woman turned it over to police.

March 21

Arrest: Police stopped a vehicle whose driver, 34, was suspended on a $1,500 warrant in the 8200 block of eastbound I-90. He was arrested at 4:09 p.m. and transferred into Bellevue police custody.

March 22

Arrest: Police took a 19-year-old Kent man into custody at 1:15 p.m. and booked him into the Issaquah Jail on a misdemeanor warrant for refusing to cooperate with a police officer while operating a motor vehicle.

Malicious mischief: Someone shattered a window in a residence in the 8500 block of S.E. 61st Street using a thrown object at 10:35 p.m. Police took a metal ball bearing into evidence.

Ten minutes later, a block away, someone shot a ball bearing into the window of a residence in the 5900 block of 84th Avenue S.E., west of Island Crest Park, at 10:45 p.m. The ball bearing penetrated the first layer of glass in the double-paned window.

March 23

Burglary: A hammer at the scene was likely used to break two lower basement and garage windows of a Faben Point home in the 6000 block of S.E. 22nd Street sometime after March 15. The burglar rummaged through purses in a bedroom but did not steal any items.

DUI: Police stopped a vehicle with a suspended driver license and registration at 2:10 a.m. in the 3500 block of East Mercer Way, and found that the driver, 23, had been drinking. The driver, a Federal Way resident, admitted consuming two to three alcoholic drinks. He failed standard sobriety tests and was later released to his mother.

March 25

Drugs: Staff at a care center in the 7400 block of S.E. 24th Street found a glass pipe, traces of meth and Vicodin tablets at 11:40 a.m. in a vacant room that had been occupied earlier in the day. The items were submitted to the police department for destruction.

Patient removed: Police were called to New Hope Rehab at 7:13 p.m. to remove a 31-year-old ex-patient who snuck into the facility after being discharged the prior day in the 7400 block of S.E. 24th Street. The patient later took a cab to her mother’s house.

Mailbox mischief: Four locking mailboxes in the 4200 block of West Mercer Way were pried open sometime after March 22. The total damage was an estimated $400. The owners of two mailboxes do not live on the Island full-time.

March 26

Fraud: A South end couple’s credit card went missing and unauthorized charges were discovered on the couple’s account between Feb. 9 and Feb. 27.

Found: A 62-year-old man reported finding a backpack and numerous personal items strewn along the walking path parallel to 77th Avenue S.E., in the 2500 block, at 9:19 a.m. Items included personal papers, clothes, medications and drug use items.
