Islanders display art at Columbia Center

The Women Painters of Washington Gallery is now showing the “Mischief” exhibition through Aug. 1. Mercer Island resident Nancy Axell is among the artists who are displaying their art pieces in the exhibit. Other Mercer Island members of the Women Painters of Washington include Esther Akrish, Madelaine Georgette, Gertrude Hollis, Genny Rees and Cissy Gray.

BBQ event to benefit YFS Food Bank

Summer Sizzle, a family Western BBQ, will be held before the Summer Celebration fireworks on July 12 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Luther Burbank Park. This benefit for the Youth and Family Services Food Bank will include a variety of savory Western recipes of chicken and pork, including a vegetarian menu, and barbecue sauces by The Upper Crust.

Tickets will be available in advance at $12 for adults and $8 for children 12 and under. At the park, prices are $13 for adults and $9 for children 12 and under. Stop by the YFS booth during Summer Celebration to purchase tickets and watch for news on other ticket outlets prior to the event.

Proceeds will go to the YFS Food Bank. YFS reports that food bank requests are up by 36 percent in the past five month compared to the same period last year. A bin will be available at the park for food donations. For more information on Summer Sizzle, call (206) 275-7751.

Missing white cat on Mercer Island

Last month, Barbara Hearon’s white cat named “Angel” went missing from the home of her son, Steve Hearon, in the 8000 block of S.E. 20th Avenue on Mercer Island. The cat had belonged to Barbara Hearon for eight years.

After Hearon was injured several months ago, she allowed her cat to be moved to her son’s home so that she could recover from her leg wounds. The cat, having ventured outside, is now missing.

“Mother is now at a stage where she would dearly love to have her companion back,” Leigh Hearon wrote to the Reporter.
