A new edition of “Pioneer Park: A Natural History” has been released. The Mercer Island Parks and Recreation book, produced by the Farrington Foundation, presents a history of Pioneer Park and serves as a comprehensive guide of the park’s trees, plants, birds, wildlife, insects and more.
The city bought the park land — 120 forested acres — in 1964 after voters approved a bond. The land had been the property of the University of Washington since Island resident Maud Walker-Ames’ death in 1931.
The first edition of the book was printed in 1972 and was revised a second time in 1990. Contributing writers include Rita Moore, Laura Dassow Walls, Mary Kenady, Ethel Dassow, Merilyn Hatheway, Gerry Adams and Henry Seidel. Prefaces by Elliot Newman, former mayor, and Peggy Reynolds are also included.
The book is available at Island Books for $25.
