Steve Maxwell, a longtime deputy sheriff, community volunteer and husband of state Rep. Marcie Maxwell, died Sunday night at Overlake Hospital Medical Center in Bellevue.

Maxwell, 57, a non-smoker, was diagnosed with lung cancer in September.

He was born in Seattle but grew up in Bryn Mawr and Renton, graduating from Renton High School. He retired from the Sheriff’s Office in April 2007, after a 30-year career.

In retirement he was active in volunteer endeavors, serving on the Renton Housing Authority board, the Renton High School Excellence In Education board and the Return to Renton Car Show board.

“His love was his car-show committee,” Marcie Maxwell said.

The Maxwells also ran the Maxwell Fund for Youth and Families under the Renton Community Foundation. The family is suggesting memorials to the Maxwell fund through the community foundation.

Marcie Maxwell, who represents the 41st District, is in the last two weeks of what she described as a “very tough session.”

The Maxwells have two children, Denise, a registered dietician, and Mike, a certified automotive service technician.

A memorial celebration is 2 p.m. and graveside service is 3 p.m. Sunday, March 7, at Greenwood Memorial Park in Renton, 350 Monroe Ave. N.E.
