Mercer Island Little League beats Idaho on Monday, now 3-0

During the first weekend of the Little League Western Regional baseball tournament in San Bernardino, the Mercer Island Little League Majors All Stars started off 3-0.

The team, which qualified after winning the Washington state title in July, beat Oregon on Friday night, 6-4.

The Greshman Nationals had the early first inning lead, 2-0, before the Islanders tied the game in the second. The team from Washington came back strong in the third inning, adding three runs to hold a 5-2 lead. Oregon attempted a late game rally in the sixth inning, but could only add one more run before the end of the game.

After a day off on Saturday, the team played Montana on Sunday evening, winning 13-3 in 3.5 innings.

Mercer Island’s 10 hits helped pave the way to an early end to the game.

The team played Idaho on Monday, Aug. 6 in a game that lasted three outs in 100 degree temperatures. Mercer Island beat the team from Post Falls, Idaho with a final score of 10-5 in six innings, to hold a 3-0 record.

The win secured the team from Mercer Island a place in Thursday’s semifinals, with seeding depending on the team’s performance in their game against Wyoming on Tuesday.

The Islanders will play the team from Cody, Wyoming on Tuesday at 11:30 a.m. Wyoming is currently 0-2 in the tournament.

The top four teams play in the semifinals on Thursday afternoon, which will be shown on ESPN2 at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. The championship game will take place on Saturday, Aug. 11, at 1 p.m., broadcast on ESPN.

The winner of the tournament will earn a spot in the Little League World Series in Pennsylvania, as the team from the Western region. The tournament begins on Aug. 16.
