The Mercer Island girls water polo team finished in fifth place at the state tournament last weekend.

The Islanders started the tournament on Wednesday afternoon, winning their first two games against Auburn Riverside and Lakes.

In the first match, the team beat Auburn Riverside in a dominating 14-0 match, followed by a 14-2 win over Lakes later that night.

With the two wins, Mercer Island earned a bye on Thursday to play in the bracket on Friday, facing off against Newport. The Islanders lost 5-3, despite strong defensive play by the team and goal Kirbi Phillips. Later that night, the team played Lakes for a second time, winning 11-4.

The Islanders finished the tournament on Saturday, May 18 against Bainbridge. Mercer Island was up 5-1 at the end of the first quarter, thanks to a strong and aggressive offense. The team would go on to score 10 more goals in the match to win 15-6 for fifth place.

As a team, Mercer Island outscored their opponents 57-18 in the tournament, with seven of the 12 players on the Islanders squad scoring goals.

This year’s team included: Jacque Li, Ileana Lam, Nola Peshkin, Mallory Phillips, Christina Williamson, Grace Thomas, Tia Ferri, Michelle Na, Kristin Hoffman, Jenna Sharman, Alicia Nordal, Kirbi Phillips and Ali Rorem. The Islanders are coached by second year head coach Ryan Hall.
