Assault: A Mercer Island man was assaulted at the Roanoke Inn on Thanksgiving at 1:22 a.m., Nov. 25. The victim, 24, was kicked and punched in the face and stomach. He lost a tooth and had several cuts on his face and mouth. A 23-year-old Mercer Island woman witnessed the attack. The suspect, a 23-year-old Mercer Island resident, fled the area before police arrived at the scene, but police found and arrested him the next day at 6:01 p.m. in the 3000 block of 80th Avenue S.E.

Nov. 23

Accident: A Ford Explorer driven by a Bellingham man, 39, broadsided a Volkswagen driven by a Mercer Island man, 78, at 1:12 p.m. in the intersection of 77th Avenue S.E. and S.E. 29th Street. The Bellingham driver did not fully stop at the stop sign and said he “had difficulty seeing the stop sign because of his dirty windshield, the sunshine and glare from the snow on the roadway.” The second vehicle, which was towed from the scene, had stopped before entering the intersection, and the driver reported having a sore neck.

Vandalized mailbox: A steel, locking mailbox of a resident in the 3600 block of 81st Avenue S.E. was vandalized between 1 a.m. and 8 a.m. The damage was reported at 1:57 p.m.

Nov. 24

Car prowl: A Mercer Island woman’s purse was stolen out of her vehicle, a Mercedes-Benz, in the 8600 block of S.E. 68th Street at approximately 6:30 p.m. on Nov. 11. The vehicle had been unlocked. The woman, a resident of S.E. 36th Street, reported the theft at 8:16 a.m. She canceled all of her accounts, notified credit agencies and put out a fraud alert within 20 minutes of the theft, as the purse had contained a Wells Fargo debit card, checks and cash.

Cracked utility pole: A Puget Sound Energy utility pole cracked after being struck by a vehicle driven by a Mercer Island woman, 50, at 12 p.m. along a driveway in the 5000 block of West Mercer Way. Compact snow and ice caused the vehicle, a Chevrolet, to slide backward as it was going up a driveway with an incline.

DUI: Police stopped a vehicle traveling in the dark without headlights at 8:53 p.m. in the 2400 block of 76th Avenue S.E. The vehicle, a Lexus, contained five male passengers who said they had been smoking marijuana. Four of them said they had been drinking. Police arrested the driver, a 19-year-old male, who failed his standard field sobriety tests. A male passenger, 19, whose backpack contained marijuana, was also arrested. Two more passengers were cited “on investigation for minor in possession.” The vehicle was taken into custody by Ibsen Towing.

Nov. 27

Assault: After telling two suspects to leave a party in the 2900 block of 70th Avenue S.E., a young man was assaulted at 1:25 a.m. His eyeglasses were broken and his lip was split after he was punched twice. The suspects also showed knives and shattered a glass door with rocks. Police contacted the only suspect who was identified, an 18-year-old Seattle resident. The suspect told police “he was home in bed” and refused to “voluntarily return to Mercer Island.” He did not answer his door or phone when the Seattle Police Department also attempted to contact him.

Nov. 29

Suspicious sale: At 10:04 a.m., a woman reported the suspected illegal sale of human remains by Seattle-based Foss Appraisal Estate Sales at an estate sale on Mercer Island.

Arrest: A Bellingham man, 27, was taken into custody for a warrant at 5:18 p.m. after being released from the King County Jail. He was transferred to the Issaquah Jail.

Arrest: A Seattle man, 34, was arrested on a Seattle warrant after a traffic stop at 4:17 p.m. in the 2600 block of 78th Avenue S.E. He was driving with a suspended license. Police transferred him into Seattle Police Department custody.

Car theft: A Mercer Island woman, 45, stole her brother’s Toyota truck in the 7700 block of S.E. 39th Street. The brother, a 48-year-old Pennsylvania resident, had been notified by the siblings’ younger brother, a Mercer Island resident, that the sister had been using the vehicle without permission. The sister found the vehicle’s keys that had been hidden from her and called her brother at 2 p.m., admitting that she had taken the truck on Nov. 28. She said she would return it, but she did not.

Nov. 30

Wallet recovered: A wallet belonging to a Seattle man was recovered at 10:36 a.m. It had been turned in to a records clerk from the Community Center at Mercer View, where it had been kept in a safe for two months. The records clerk found that the wallet, which contained a Washington state ID card and debit card, had been stolen in Bellevue.

Fraud: Three transactions totaling $500 were fraudulently made on a Mercer Island man’s account at an unknown ATM machine at 10:52 a.m. The victim’s bank alerted him of the fraud. The victim still had his ATM card.

Dec. 1

Hit and run: A mailbox was struck by an unknown vehicle in the 8840 of S.E. 40th Street and Gallagher Hill Road during the previous evening or overnight. The total damage was $100.

Found: A Mercer Island man, 20, found a single-button remote control device on an outdoor Starbucks table at 3030 78th Avenue S.E. at 3:01 a.m. He took the device to the fire department so that they could pass it on to police.

Laptop theft: A 17-year-old student’s laptop was stolen out of the common area in Mercer Island High School at 3 p.m. The laptop, a MacBook Pro, which had been underneath the girl’s backpack on a table, was taken while the girl was talking with friends nearby.

Dec. 2

Lamppost struck: A large truck from British Columbia hit a city lamppost at 8:35 a.m. while turning out of the QFC parking lot onto northbound 78th Avenue S.E. in the 2800 block. The driver did not leave enough room for side clearance.

Disturbance: A Mercer Island woman, 53, claimed at 5:18 p.m. that her ex-husband, 52, drove his vehicle into her house on West Mercer Way and sent “threatening” e-mails. Police detained the husband at the house but released him after finding that his vehicle had accidentally come into contact with a deck post and created minor damage, and the e-mails were not threatening.
