The Mercer Island girls select basketball program made a very strong showing at the Lady Skyhawk Classic tournament hosted by Southridge High School over President’s Day weekend in Beaverton, Ore.

Four teams from Mercer Island participated in the tournament, including both fifth grade teams.

The Mercer Island fifth grade Maroon team, coached by Carrie Krause, sailed through pool play and bracket play with four convincing victories en route to the championship game.

The fifth grade White team, coached by Eddie Miles, also went undefeated in pool play and bracket play to advance to the final game.

In the championship game, the Maroon team jumped out to an early lead and never looked back, rolling to a 27-13 victory over their friends on the White team.

The five Mercer Island girls teams in the 5th through 8th grades currently have a combined record of 44-21 in league play, including a 13-0 record for the 5th Maroon team.
