April 18 was the second annual Leap For Green Earth Day Celebration. It was a fun and exciting event that made learning about ways to steward our world a real joy for the very young and the not-so-young. This year, more members of our own community were in the game from the Farmer’s Market crew and the nascent Urban Farming group, including their chickens, worms and beehives, to Friends of Luther Burbank, offering walking tours of rarely seen natural habitats and Backyard Wildlife Habitat; the Healthy Ways to School Program, MI Bikes and electric vehicles; Island Books, the Mercer Island Public Library, Hula Hoop dancing, carbon footprinting, film series (to be expanded on) and so much more. Our Island community is making great strides toward a more sustainable future, thanks to these individuals and organizations.

The hugely successful event, which brought our community together in an upbeat way to celebrate the place we live in, was co-sponsored by IslandVision, the city of Mercer Island and the Mercer Island Community Fund. It wouldn’t have been possible to pull it off without the dedicated and energetic work put in by city staff and community volunteers alike. In addition to staff, the city dedicated the venue and invaluable marketing. And without the generous grant from the Mercer Island Community Fund, there would have been no fair at all.
