A Ford Fusion went into a ditch and was driven through a yard at 10:58 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 2, in the 4200 block of 89th Avenue S.E., near Mercer Island High School. The driver, a 51-year-old Seattle woman, left her business card at the victim’s house and explained that “her mother lived around the corner,” according to the police report. Police contacted the suspect one block to the east and found that she was highly intoxicated. She was arrested after midnight.
Dec. 21
Lost backpack: A 56-year-old Mercer Island man found a black backpack at 2 p.m. along the side of the road in the 2600 block of 80th Avenue S.E. The backpack contained two metal thermoses and a cell phone.
Dec. 23
Burglary: Sometime between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m., a house was burglarized in the Lakes neighborhood, in the 7400 block of 80th Place S.E., while the residents were gone. A rock was thrown through a window of the back garage door, and the door was then unlocked for access. Jewelry and an iPad were stolen. Fingerprints were lifted for evidence.

DUI: Police stopped a Hyundai for lane travel and signal violations at 2:53 a.m. in the 6000 block of westbound I-90. The driver, a 31-year-old man, admitted drinking alcohol. He failed standard sobriety tests and was arrested at 3:08 a.m.
Dec. 27
Thefts: Someone stole a Mikasa vibratory plate compactor, overnight, from a private South end construction site in the 7800 block of S.E. 70th Street. Two Labor Systems workers, recently hired by the victim, are suspected as they were the last to leave the site.
A 31-year-old woman reported that two packages were stolen from her front porch sometime after Dec. 24 in the 9700 block of S.E. 40th Street. The boxes contained clothing and boots from Old Navy and Nordstrom, shipped by FedEx and UPS. The total loss was $250.
Dec. 28
Graffiti: A mailbox and key pad were spraypainted silver in the 6200 block of East Mercer Way sometime after Dec. 21. The total damage was estimated to be $800.
The MIPD speed trailer was spraypainted silver and black while parked along the southbound shoulder of the road in the 6000 block of East Mercer Way, sometime during the previous 24 hours.
Cab driver duped: Two men caught a taxi cab from Capital Hill to Mercer Island and directed the driver to Lakeridge Elementary. Both passengers got out of the cab at the school and ran away without paying at 2:16 a.m. The driver lost sight of them after they ran into the Lakes neighborhood, south, in the 8200 block of S.E. 78th Street. They owed $42.50.

DUI: Police stopped a Volkswagen with a nonfunctioning taillight at 1:26 a.m. in the 9600 block of eastbound I-90. The driver, 31, smelled of intoxicants and admitted consuming alcohol. She failed standard sobriety tests and was arrested.
Theft: A 56-year-old man’s front license plate and SR-520 Good to Go pass were stolen from his vehicle, a Subaru Legacy, sometime after Dec. 22. The victim, a resident of the Shorewood Apartments, immediately changed his license plate number at the DOL.
Dec. 30
DUI: A Mercer Island police officer stopped a Toyota Corolla driving with its headlights off at 1:03 a.m. in the 7000 block of Bellevue Way. The 23-year-old driver admitted drinking three beers. He was arrested and charged on investigation for DUI.
Burglary: A couple came home from church and found that their residence, in the 8900 block of S.E. 54th Street, had been burglarized between 9:55 and 11:25 a.m. The residence is in a neighborhood east of Island Park Elementary School. Suspects threw a rock through a 2-by-1.5-foot double-paned window, reached in and unlocked it, then climbed inside. The burglars ransacked the master bedroom and stole jewelry along with an iMac computer. They did not disturb the rest of the residence except for opening a linen closet door.

Fraud: Someone tried to purchase gift cards using a 71-year-old Mercer Island man’s name, address and Social Security number. The victim’s information was used in an attempt to open a Visa card account. However, Equifax alerted the victim before the account applications were processed.
Jan. 1
DUI: A Mercer Island police officer arrested a 48-year-old man for DUI after he ran a red light in the intersection of Bellevue Way and N.E. 7th Street at 1:37 a.m. The driver failed standard sobriety tests and smelled strongly of intoxicants.
Arrest: Police booked a 19-year-old Seattle man into the Issaquah Jail on an outstanding $5,000 DUI warrant.
Jan. 2
Abandoned bike: A bike left for several days in front of the Mary Wayte Pool, in the 8800 block of S.E. 40th Street, was placed into the MIPD found property.
DUI: An Acura Integra sped up close behind a police car and quickly slowed down at 10:56 p.m. in the 8800 block of eastbound I-90. As the officer slowed, the 22-year-old driver pulled over and stopped “of his own volition,” according to the police report. The officer arrested the driver, a Bellevue resident, who had been drinking.
