Mercer Island High School managed one of just two Washington state wins on the opening day of Northwest Invitational action with a commanding 19 – 5 boys high school lacrosse defeat of Oregon’s Sunset High School Friday at Islander Stadium. The win improved the Islanders to a perfect 7 – 0 on the season.
Led by Devlin Conway’s 13 of 15 wins on the face-off “X”, the Islanders racked up 6 first-quarter goals, and then added another 4 in the second to take a 10 – 3 halftime lead over the 2013 Oregon state lacrosse runner-up.
It was more of the same for coach Ian O’Hearn’s team in the second half as the Islanders continued to pour it on with 7 third-quarter goals before cruising to victory with just a pair in the final set.
Peter Mahony led the way for the Islanders with 3 goals and 4 assists while grabbing a single ground ball. Sunset had goals from Jeff Bieber, Tillman Gallagher, and Drew Gamroth, while goaltenders Nial Peters and Tristan Aimotti combined for 12 saves.
