The Washington State Board of Education announced the recipients of the Washington Achievement Awards, given to schools that “profoundly affect student learning,” on March 17.

Island Park was recognized for overall excellence, language arts and science; and both Lakeridge and Mercer Island High School for overall excellence.

The awards are part of the State Board’s accountability program, adopted in 2009. Under the program, all schools will be indexed according to outcomes and indicators from 2007 to 2009. The five outcomes are student performance in statewide reading, writing, math and science tests, as well as the school’s extended graduation rate, which includes those students who took longer than four years to graduate. Schools are being recognized for being top performers in six categories: overall excellence, language arts, math, science, an extended graduation rate (only awarded to high and comprehensive schools), and for gifted education.

“We’re proud of these schools,” said state superintendent Randy Dorn. “They’re showing that great gains can be made for all students.”

Mercer Island Superintendent Gary Plano echoed Dorn’s assessment, adding, “This award of distinction is recognition of our students’ commitment to the learning process. Our teachers and parents are very proud of you.” The schools will be recognized at celebrations around the state on May 5.

According to Michael Schiehser, director of secondary learning for the Mercer Island School District, “This is another accolade that recognizes the outstanding leadership and commitment to improving student learning in our schools. Congratulations to the staff, students and these entire school communities.”
