Mercer Island High School students Jenna Sukernek and Jared Thomas have been named as the Rotary Islanders of the month for March.
Sukernek is the first ASB community outreach coordinator at MIHS and is a member of the National Honor Society, Key Club and Senior Service Club. She is also a Bridges leader, Relay for Life Committee member, JV tennis captain and most inspirational player. In Drama II, she is a member of Dreamstate Productions.
In the community, she is the vice president and past president of the Temple DeHirsch Sinai youth group, secretary of the National Charity League and USO volunteer. She has also volunteered at Camp Dragonfly Forest for critically ill children. In her spare time, she works with children and travels. The daughter of Warren and Linda Sukernek, she plans to major in human and organizational development at Vanderbilt University in the fall.
Thomas is a member of MIHS varsity tennis, varsity baseball, the MIHS wind ensemble, National Honor Society and Senior Service Club. He is also a drum major in the MIHS marching band and a Bridges leader. His participation in community organizations includes Boy Scout Troop 457, Eagle Scout, private cello and trumpet study, the Joyce Hedlund Memorial Campaign and VOICE program. He is also a trumpet tutor with Seattle Music Partners and a MIBC tennis staff member. In his spare time, he skis and has started a tennis racket stringing business. The son of Robert Thomas and Susan Reichert, he has applied to several colleges.
