It’s twice as nice for the Mercer Island boys and girls tennis teams, which both won their second straight state title on Saturday, May 26.
The girls team won with 19 points, while Hanford finished in second place with 16 points. The boys team earned the title with 35 points, beating Seattle Prep in second with 12 points.
Individually, Island junior Nora Tan won the girls single title, beating Barbara Ann Carey of Seattle Prep 6-4, 6-1 in the title match.
The doubles team of Sophia Gage and Lydia Venditti took second place in the tournament, losing in the championship match to the Baba sisters from Pairie High School 2-6, 6-1, 7-5.
Jordan Smith took second overall in the boys singles tournament, falling 5-7, 6-1 and 6-3 to Bellevue’s Zack Kosanke.
Smith beat Brian Hou in the semifinals of the tournament, and Hou went on to take sixth place overall, falling to Frederik Strabo of Seattle Prep 6-3, 7-6.
Strabo beat Henry Smith in the quarterfinals on Friday afternoon. Henry Smith beat JOrdan Richardson of Lakes before beating Peter Koessler 6-0, 6-3 to finish in fourth place.
In the boys doubles tournament, Kyle Baska and Marcus Almqvist started off with a win in the quarterfinals, before falling in the semifinals to a team from Kennedy. They beat Quinten Dicken and Shane Sadlin of Hanford for third place in the tournament.
The Islanders brother duo of Zack and Ben Elliot lost their first round match, but went on to win the next four matches to take fifth place overall.
