Islander on University of Redlands men’s water polo team collects ACWPC all-academic plaudits

The University of Redlands men’s water polo team had six Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPC) Men’s All-Academic Award recipients for the 2009 season, as announced Wednesday by the ACWPC, including former Mercer Island High School player Teddy Trowbridge.

Honorees are broken up into three categories: outstanding, superior and excellent. Those who fall in the “outstanding” category have cumulative GPAs between 4.0 and 3.71, those who fall in the “superior” category have cumulative GPAs between 3.70 and 3.41 and those who fall in the “excellent” category have cumulative GPAs between 3.40 and 3.20.

Senior center Ryan Floersch, San Jose, Calif., senior central defender John Floersch, San Jose, Calif., senior driver Brent Dotters, Porterville, Calif. and senior goalkeeper Teddy Trowbridge, Mercer Island, Wash., all earned the “superior” distinction, while freshman driver Zac Chierici, Millbrae, Calif., and junior driver Tim Hendrickson, Los Altos, Calif., received the “excellent” distinction.

Trowbridge served as the program’s starting netminder for the third consecutive year in 2009 and ranked 10th nationally in saves with 234. A Computer Science major with a 3.408 GPA, Trowbridge reaped the fruit of his labor when he was named to the All-SCIAC Second Team and the ACWPC Honorable Mention All-America Team after a season where he enjoyed a formidable stretch run.

Redlands (18-18, 9-1 SCIAC) won its eighth SCIAC title in program history in 2009 and also placed seventh at the 2009 WWPA Championships.
