Hazmat crew cleans up waste dumped on vehicle in carport | Mercer Island Police Blotter

A hazmat cleaning service was called to clean up a hazardous mess at a residence east of Island Crest Way on Jan. 22. Four gallons of vomit and excrement were dumped onto a Mercedes-Benz that was parked in a carport located in the 4500 block of 86th Avenue S.E. Fingerprints were taken from a five-gallon bucket and a pair of latex gloves for evidence, along with a sample to be tested for DNA. The resident, a 58-year-old woman, reported the incident on Saturday afternoon and suspected that a person had entered her carport sometime during the past 24 hours.

Jan. 17

Light post hit: A light post next to the 78th Avenue entrance to QFC was knocked to the ground after being struck by a freight truck at 7:02 a.m. The driver, a Graham man, 31, had trouble with a tight turn northbound and saw the light post on the ground in his mirror while he was backing up. He said he did not hear or feel any impact.

Jan. 18

Malicious mischief: The tires of a Toyota Corolla were punctured in the 3200 block of 80th Avenue S.E. sometime on Jan. 12 when it was parked overnight in front of a condo. The hood, doors and front panels of the vehicle were also scratched. The incident was reported at 9:36 a.m.

Malicious mischief: A BMW was keyed sometime overnight at an apartment complex in the 9000 block of East Shorewood Drive. The owner, a 30-year-old man, did not know any potential suspects.

Drugs turned in: A Mercer Island man, 46, brought glass jars with oil and suspected marijuana to be destroyed at the MIPD. He claimed they “belonged to his estranged girlfriend.”

Theft: Two firearms, stereo equipment and a gold coin were stolen from a Mercer Island man’s house in the 2500 block of 71st Avenue S.E. The items were stolen by the man’s wife, a 48-year-old Kent resident, who came to the residence between 10 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. The couple was in the process of getting a no-contact order and a divorce. There was one witness of the incident.

Car prowl: Music CDs and a wallet were stolen out of an unlocked Chevrolet Tahoe between 11:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. in the 1800 block of West Mercer Way. The victim, 29, did not know that his wallet was missing until his bank notified him of suspicious activity on his debit card. Fingerprints were taken for evidence.

Arrest: A Mercer Island woman, 24, was arrested for three outstanding warrants at 10:19 p.m. in the 3000 block of 65th Place S.E. after police saw her vehicle parked at her parents’ residence. She was booked into the Issaquah Jail.

Jan. 19

Theft: Police arrested a Kenmore woman, 39, at 1:55 p.m. for stealing grocery items at the QFC on S.E. 28th Street. A QFC security investigator found two separate incidents of shoplifting on security camera footage from Dec. 31 and Jan. 6, and called police to report the suspect, who admitted to shoplifting and was cited. There was one witness involved.

Attempted car prowl: A rock was used to break the window of a Lexus at 2:30 p.m. in the 2000 block of Faben Drive. A witness saw the suspect, a Seattle man, 44, throw the rock. Police arrested the suspect several blocks away at 2800 62nd Avenue S.E. and cited him for malicious mischief and attempted vehicle prowl. He was booked into the Issaquah Jail.

Jan. 20

Arrest: Bellevue police arrested a Mercer Island man, 55, for a MIPD warrant at 11:55 a.m. He was booked into the Issaquah Jail after being taken to the MIPD.

Arrest: A Mercer Island woman, 48, was arrested at 6:29 p.m. in the 7800 block of Sunset Highway. Her tabs were expired and she was driving with a suspended license and two counts of Failure to Appear on record. The driver signed a waiver of impound for her vehicle to remain at the scene. She was processed and released at the MIPD.

Jan. 21

Graffiti: $250 worth of damage was done to a MISD building in the 8800 block of S.E. 40th Street sometime during the night of Jan. 15. Graffiti was spraypainted onto the back wall of the building. It was reported at 9:08 a.m.

Accident: A collision occurred when a Mercer Island woman, 92, failed to yield to oncoming traffic while making a left turn around 11:30 a.m. in the intersection of 86th Avenue and S.E. 40th Street. Both vehicles in the collision had a green light. The woman was taken to the hospital with a cut on her arm, and her vehicle was towed from the scene.

Arrest: Police arrested an Olympia woman, 23, for assault at 3:50 p.m. in the 8600 block of S.E. 75th Place. The woman had assaulted her sister, a 20-year-old Mercer Island resident, and admitted to unplugging the phone when the victim called 911. Photographs were taken of the victim’s injuries, and the suspect was booked into the Issaquah Jail.

Arrest: Police arrested a Mercer Island man, 20, at 10:16 p.m. in the 2700 block of 78th Avenue S.E. The suspect had a report of sale violation and was driving with a suspended license and three counts of Failure to Appear on record. He was processed and released at the MIPD.

Jan. 22

Flat tires: An unknown suspect flattened the driver’s side tires of a Toyota Camry sometime overnight in the 9700 block of S.E. 40th Street. The victim, a 40-year-old woman, said she suspected that someone had used a knife to flatten the tires.

Fall: A Mercer Island woman, 48, broke an ankle after falling on a foot trail at 4:30 p.m. along the Luther Burbank Park shoreline. Mercer Island firefighters assisted the woman, who was taken to the hospital.

Jan. 23

DUI: Police stopped a driver at 12:37 a.m. for improper lane travel and not signaling within 100 feet of turning in the 3800 block of East Mercer Way. An odor of intoxicants in the vehicle was strongly evident, and the driver, a 22-year-old Tacoma man, said he had consumed two beers. He failed standard field sobriety tests, and his vehicle was impounded. The driver was released to a sober adult after being processed.

DUI: Police arrested a Mercer Island man, 22, at 1:44 a.m. after he hit two parked cars along the shoulder of 88th Avenue S.E. in the 3900 block. The driver was drunk and had marijuana in his possession. He failed standard field sobriety tests and was released to his mother after being processed at the MIPD.

Arrest: Police arrested a Mercer Island woman, 47, who violated a protection order at 4:26 p.m. in the 7100 block of S.E. 22nd Street. The woman was within 500 feet of the protected victim’s residence. The suspect was booked into the King County Jail.

Arrest: After not paying the fare for a taxi cab to Mercer Island and violating a protection order, a 22-year-old woman was arrested at 3:45 a.m. in the 9000 block of West Shorewood Drive. Police also found that she was in possession of nonprescribed medication. She was booked into the King County Jail.

Jan. 24

Fender-bender: A vehicle was rear-ended on a slick road in the rain after stopping for a pedestrian in a crosswalk at 9:50 a.m. in the 4700 block of Island Crest Way. No injuries were reported.
