City, school district sign playfields agreement

The city and school district have both signed the interlocal Maintenance and Improvements of Certain School District Sports Fields Agreement.

The agreement determines the hours which Island athletic fields are guaranteed for school and public use. It also stipulates the shared maintenance and improvement policies between the city and school district.

In particular, the agreement focuses on the South Mercer Playfields. The three dirt baseball diamonds at the South Mercer park are currently being upgraded with synthetic turf and appropriate drainage. A concession stand and batting cage is also part of the plan, as well as an outfield fence with a warning track, among other amenities.

The city is updating its “Reverse 911” database this week. “Reverse 911” is a communication tool that utilizes a database of GIS Mapping telephone numbers and addresses to deliver emergency notifications to the community by phone. It allows city officials to quickly deliver emergency notifications throughout the Island for situations such as contaminated water, flooding, evacuations, major road closures, severe weather conditions, immediate crime notifications and other critical incidents.

Most residents are already registered if they have a landline phone. However, Island residents without home phones need to register their cell phones to receive the emergency information.
