The regular season for Mercer Island High School winter sports comes to an end this week, and as early as this weekend, the postseason begins.

While seedings and exact playoff positions are likely yet to be finalized, here’s a general look of tournament dates, times and possibilities for the playoffs.

Boys swim & dive

The Islanders boys swim team finished the regular season on Friday, Jan. 25, with a meet win against non-conference Roosevelt. This weekend the team will kick off the postseason with the KingCo meet. The team won six of its regular season meets, losing just one KingCo meet to Bellevue on Jan. 10.

The KingCo event begins Friday, Feb. 1, with the prelims at the University of Washington swimming pool, and wraps up on Saturday, Feb. 2, also at UW, with the finals.

For those who qualified, the SeaKing District meet will take place Feb. 8-9 at Mary Wayte Pool. The prelim competition begins at 4:15 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 8, followed by the finals at 5:15 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 9. The district diving competition will be held at the Juanita High School pool on Saturday at 10:30 a.m.

The boys 3A state meet will be held in Federal Way at the King County Aquatic Center, Feb. 15-16.

Boys basketball

The Mercer Island boys basketball team will finish the regular season on Thursday, Jan. 31, at Lake Washington. The Islanders, as of Monday, Jan. 28, are the No. 1 team in KingCo going into the postseason.

The KingCo basketball tournament begins on Saturday, Feb. 2, and as the likely No. 1 seed, the Islanders will earn a bye in the first round. The team would then play the winner of a Saturday game on Tuesday, Feb. 5, at Bellevue College at 6:30 p.m. The KingCo championship game will be held on Thursday, Feb. 7, at Bellevue College at 6:30 p.m.

The top four teams in the KingCo tournament advance to the SeaKing District tournament, which begins on Feb. 9. The top five teams will advance out of the district tournament to the regional round, to be played Feb. 23 at either Glacier Peak, Bellevue College, Mt. Tahoma or University high schools.

The 3A state tournament will be held Feb. 28 through March 2 at the Tacoma Dome.

Gymnastics

The Mercer Island gymnastics team also finished the regular season last week and will prepare for the KingCo meet on Feb. 2.

The 4A/3A/2A KingCo meet will be held at Roosevelt High School in Seattle on Saturday. The top two teams from the KingCo meet will move on to districts, and the top three all-around gymnasts and top eight individuals also move forward.

Those that qualify will advance to the SeaKing District meet on Saturday, Feb. 8, at Sammamish High School.

The first session begins at 5 p.m., and the second session will start at 7 p.m. Awards are scheduled to be announced around 8:45 p.m.

From the district meet, the top three teams, top five all-around and top 13 individuals will qualify for the state meet.

The WIAA state gymnastics meet will take place at the Tacoma Dome Exhibition Hall starting on Friday, Feb. 15, and finishes on Feb. 16.

Girls basketball

The girls basketball team will wrap up the regular season on Thursday, Jan. 31, against Lake Washington. The Islanders, as of Monday, Jan. 28, were tied with Juanita and Liberty as the No. 2 spot in KingCo. If a tiebreaker game is needed after the final games this week, the Islanders would play on Friday, Feb. 1.

If the team ends up as the No. 3 or No. 4 team in the league, they will play their first KingCo tournament match on Saturday, Feb. 2, at home. KingCo games, after the first round, will be played at Bellevue College.

The top four teams in KingCo will move on to the SeaKing District tournament, which begins Feb. 9, and the top five teams from districts move to the regional round on Feb. 23.

Teams earning berths to the 3A state tournament will play at the Tacoma Dome from Feb. 28 through March 2.

Wrestling

The wrestling team ended the regular season on Thursday, Jan. 24, with a win over Bellevue, as the regular season champions and will begin the postseason this weekend at the KingCo tournament at Interlake High School.

The competition starts at 4:30 p.m. at Interlake on Friday, Feb. 1, and continues at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 2.

The Islanders will then travel to Kelso High School for the 3A regional event on Saturday, Feb. 9.

Those who qualify will move forward to the 25th Mat Classic state tournament, held Feb. 15 and 16 at the Tacoma Dome in Tacoma.
