Only two gymnasts have won the all-around title this season during meets involving Mercer Island, and both are Islanders.
That streak continued on Thursday, when Mercer Island senior Laura Maruhashi won the all-around with a score of 35 points as Mercer Island lost to Newport 168-151.
Coach Lenny Lewis spiced things up by dubbing the meet “Hawaiian Night.” Along with the blow-up whale in the middle of the gym and the palm trees by the door, Lewis was wearing a hula skirt and leis.
“It is just meant to be fun,” said Lewis. “It is senior night.”
The loss came as fellow Islander Olivia Harvey sat and watched the meet with a injured ankle. Harvey and Maruhashi have been a dynamic one-two punch for the Islanders all year as one or the other has won the all-around at each meet.
“I didn’t even know that,” said Maruhashi. “I am focused on what I do best.”
One of those things is performing on vault, where she scored a 9.15 against Newport.
But this night was not just about scores, as it was the final meet in the Mercer Island High School gymnasium for the seniors, who were honored following the meet.
“It is great to be able to be here and support my teammates,” said Harvey, who was disappointed she could not compete. “I was expecting less than what happened this year. I will be back for KingCo. If Laura and I can stay strong it will be fun to see what can happen.”
As a team, the Islanders suffered only their second loss of the season Thursday as they finished third in the league.
“This is a really big team so it has been a little hard to manage but it has been fun because we are all really close,” said Maruhashi.
