41st district Democrats hold leads in August primary

Tana Senn, Judy Clibborn and Lisa Wellman are leading in their respective races for state representative and state senator.

Preliminary results for the Aug. 2 primary are in, and Islanders and incumbents Tana Senn and Judy Clibborn, both Democrats, are leading in their respective races in the 41st district.

For the state senate seat, Litzow has a narrow lead of 48.63 percent on fellow Islander and Democrat Lisa Wellman, who earned 47.63 percent of the vote. Bryan Simonson trails with 3.58 percent.

Update: Litzow was trailing Democrat challenger Lisa Wellman as of Aug. 6, despite appearing to be beating her in early returns. Wellman now has a narrow lead of 48.65 percent on Litzow, who earned 47.43 percent of the vote. Simonson still trails with 3.80 percent.

Litzow had 169 more votes than Wellman as of the initial tally at 8:15 p.m. Tuesday.

Senn is leading challenger John Pass 63.22 percent to 36.66 percent, and Clibborn earned 53.92 percent of the vote to Michael Appleby’s 34.86 percent, William Popp’s 9.14 percent and Angel Jordan’s 1.99 percent for state representative Pos. 1 and Pos. 2, respectively.

Results will be updated most weekdays by 4:30 p.m. until certification on Aug. 16. For more election results, click here.

Update: As of Aug. 4, the gap in the state senate race was narrowing. Litzow led Wellman 48.17 percent to 48.07 percent, with 22 votes separating the two candidates.

Litzow has served in the Legislature since 2010 and chairs the Senate Early Learning and K-12 Education Committee. Fully funding education was cited as the most important issue of the election by Litzow and Wellman prior to the primary, as the Legislature has pledged to address the McCleary decision this session.
