Islander water polo, volleyball teams improve to 4-0 Wednesday.

Boys water polo outlasts Roosevelt

Mercer Island boys water polo survived an overtime battle with Roosevelt Wednesday night at Mercer Island Country Club. Scoring three goals in extra time, the Islanders outlasted the Roughriders, 14-12.

Anthony Pedreira led the Islanders in scoring with eight goals, while Jack Larkin pitched in four and Hunter Peshkin netted 15 saves.

This weekend, the Islanders travel to Beaverton, Ore. to compete in the Tualatin Hills water polo tournament, which takes place Sept. 19-21.

Volleyball improves to 4-0

Mercer Island volleyball remained undefeated Wednesday, sweeping Lake Washington in three sets 25-8, 25-23 and 25-17 at MIHS. The Islanders improved to 4-0, tied with Bellevue for first place in the KingCo 3A/2A standings.

For the Islanders, Brooke Behrbaum had 10 kills and five blocks, Kelly Behrbaum had seven kills and a block and Tess Hendelman posted two kills, 10 digs and six aces.

Next up for Mercer Island will be a rematch of last year’s 3A state championship final, as the Islanders take on Holy Names at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 19 at MIHS.
