Mercer Island’s first Pumpkin Walk to be held Oct. 22

Join the Island community for a fun and festive, and non-scary, pumpkin walk from 6-8 p.m. on Oct. 22 in Pioneer Park.

During this brand new event, the northwest perimeter of the trail will be glowing with a display of carved pumpkins for families of all ages to enjoy. The starting point will be on the trail near the South Fire Station, across from Starbucks, and the pumpkins will line the trail adjacent to 84th Avenue Southeast.

Islanders Amanda Colburn, Kau’ilani Robinson and Lindsey Holt and their families are organizing the event. Colburn said that she attended a pumpkin walk while in college in Ohio.

“It was a couple miles long and so fun and magical,” she wrote in an email. “Since moving to Mercer Island three years ago, I’ve thought about how great it would be if the Island started its own pumpkin walk tradition.”

Mercer Island has a few festive events for Halloween, including the Monster Dash and the Mercer Island Preschool Association Halloween party, but “nothing quite like this,” Colburn said.

Her family often walks the Pioneer Park loop with their dog, and she said it always seemed like the perfect spot for a pumpkin walk, especially with leaves changing colors and falling during the autumn season.

The organizers need help from the community to make the event a success. Drop off carved pumpkins at the corner of 84th Avenue Southeast and Southeast 68th Street between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. on Oct. 22. Candles will be provided.

“We hope that families get excited about carving pumpkins and contributing them to the event,” Colburn said. “We’d love it to become an annual tradition and hopefully continue to grow in size and scope.”

This is an outdoor event; please dress for the weather. Costumes are optional.
