The 2014 Flash Family Inspirational award honors two Islanders, Rabbi Bob Maslan and Bob Zimmerman, affectionately known as ‘the Bobs.’ Mr. Zimmerman died last month.

In their 70s, as educators at the Frankel Religious School of Herzl-Ner Tamid ‘The Bobs’ taught with enthusiasm, optimism and a respect for the young people in their classes.

Each spring, the Youth and Family Services Department awards the Flash Family Inspirational Award to honor a Mercer Island senior adult who exemplifies the spirit of good sportsmanship or community leadership and who possesses an optimistic attitude and friendly demeanor while acting as a role model to others.

The award announcement said: “‘The Bobs,’ have been lifelong educators. In their septuagenarian season of life, their interactions with students conveyed an attitude of worth and respect.  They ensured that each young person achieved their fullest potential and they made sure that every child is looked after.”

“‘The Bobs’ convey an excitement for knowledge and create an exceptional classroom that fostered learning and growth, friends said. With engaging stories, funny anecdotes and a personal and caring approach, the Bobs role modeled perseverance and a never-give-up fortitude that served as an example to adults as well as the youth in their classrooms. Their presence and commitment created a meaningful foundation for the entire Frankel Religious School team. Together, ‘The Bobs’ embodied, most importantly, the philosophy of ‘The advancement of learning is the highest commandment,’ from Jewish philosopher, scholar and physician, Maimonides, as well as the intent of the Flash Family Inspiration Award.”

As part of the award, recipients receive a gift, are recognized by the Mercer Island City Council and their names will be engraved in the perpetual award plaque located at the Mercer Island Community and Events Center.
