Douglas Jack F. Kuhn

Douglas Jack F. Kuhn died on December 2, 2011 of heart failure. He was born to Carl and Gwen Kuhn of Mercer Island on March 15, 1965. He was raised on Mercer Island where he graduated from Mercer Island High School in 1983. During this time he was active in sports and Boy Scouts attaining the rank of Eagle Scout. Doug attended the University of Washington graduating in 1988 in Civil Engineering. After graduation, he obtained his Professional Engineering license and worked with his dad Carl and brother Scott at Kuhn Associates, a family Engineering firm started by his father Carl Kuhn. In 1994 he married Dana Paulson and together they added4 wonderful sons: Dain, Peter, Caleb and Jack.Doug and Dana were actively involved in Young Life Ministry and were volunteer leaders at Newport High School. Passionate about using civil engineering for building Christ’s kingdom, Doug followed God’s call to use his civil engineering in Young Life! In his position as Site Engineer, he helped construct both (Wildhorse) Canyon and, later, Creekside middle school camps at Young Life’s Washington Family Ranch in central Oregon.Doug was an adventurous father who took his wife to Europe, Mexico, Hawaii, took his family to National Parks in a motor home, day trips to beautiful places, mountain biking, Disney World too. His favorite ‘getaway’ was his family’s cabin on Vashon Island where he spent many happy days with his family and friends. Forty-six years was not long enough for us to enjoy him. But surely long enough for us to appreciate and savor his creative, and occasionally random, sense of humor, his strong integrity, incredible work ethic, and adventurous spirit! His whole life was about worshipping, loving and becoming closer to Jesus Christ, his Savior. He brought his boys up in strong faith and love for God and God’s Word. More than anything on earth, he delighted in his sons! He loved throwing the ball with them, giving them hugs and telling them that he loved them, especially each night when he prayed with each one and tucked them in.Doug will be missed by all of us: wife Dana, 4 sons Dain,Peter, Caleb and Jack, his mom, Gwen Kuhn of Mercer Island, brother Scott (Cathy), and sisters Kris (Archie) and Karen (Philipp),11 nieces and nephews, as well as the Dain and Jean Paulson family of Selah, and, of course, all of his wonderful friends. We will all miss him so much!Doug was preceded in death by his father, Carl Kuhn. A celebration of Doug’s life will be held at 3:00 pm, on Saturday, December 10, at Yakima First Presbyterian Church. In lieu of flowers, contributions could be made to Young Life’s Washington Family Ranch “Leave No Camper Behind” scholarship fund at YLWFR, One Muddy Road, Antelope OR, 97001.
