Adelaide Louise Nystrom Robinson, a woman of extraordinary determination and humor, was born in the tiny Swedish community of Savonburg, Kansas, in 1914. She died peacefully at Covenant Shores on Dec. 14.
After several years of teaching in a one-room schoolhouse in Savonburg, “Addie” moved to California in 1935 and worked her way through San Jose State College, obtaining a teaching credential in 1937. While teaching in Aptos, Calif., she met Clinton Robinson, of Santa Cruz, who she married in 1941. Clint and Adelaide began married life in San Francisco, where she worked while he attended medical school at Stanford University and UC Berkeley.
The couple moved to Healdsburg, Calif., in 1945, where they enjoyed a life filled with friends and community service, and raised a family of four. Mrs. Robinson was active in Assistance League and Omega Nu, led Campfire Girls and Boy Scouts, and was the organist, pianist and choir director at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. Her home was always open to friends and neighbors, who knew there was a fresh pot of coffee waiting, and to neighborhood kids, who loved her welcoming ways.
Upon Clint’s retirement in 1971, the couple returned to Aptos, Calif., and delighted in many traveling adventures. After Clint’s death in 1989, Mrs. Robinson moved to the retirement community of Covenant Shores on Mercer Island. In 1993, she married the Reverend Carl Peterson, with whom she shared a fulfilling life until his passing in 1997. Never one to look back, Mrs. Robinson happily remained at Covenant Shores, enjoying a multitude of friends and activities.
Mrs. Robinson’s faith and family were the cornerstones of her life. She was a self-taught pianist whose love of music was immediately perceived by anyone fortunate enough to hear her play. She traveled the world with both of her husbands and with friends and family, and was even a passenger to Paris on the Concorde at the age of 76.
Mrs. Robinson is survived by her children, Nancy Robinson, Diane Peccianti, Clint Robinson Jr. (Elvira), Jane Robinson (Greg Durbin) and Jan Sullivan; her grandchildren, Rob Michaelson (Laura), Jamie D’Amico (Joe), Anna Peccianti, Meredith Durbin, and Megan and Kate Sullivan; and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her brother, Norvell Nystrom, and her son-in-law, Tony Mauro.
Mrs. Robinson’s family would like to thank the staff at Covenant Shores for their compassionate care and her friends for their devotion.
