Carl McNeilan (Neil) Ballard
Neil Ballard was born April 2, 1920 at Swedish Hospital in Seattle and died September 9, 2010 of lung cancer. He was predeceased by his oldest son David in 2007 and older brother Ernest (Helen), and is survived by his wife of 55 years Jude, daughter-in-law Kitty, son Douglas (Jean), daughters Katy, Marcella (Noah Shube), Storey (Steve Hahn), and nine grandchildren: Blair and Brad Ballard, Brent Ballard, Milo Mincin, Alexander and Leah Shube, and Delanie, Marci and Caroline Hahn; younger brother Douglas (Betsy) of Vancouver B.C. and nieces and nephews. Neil graduated from Garfield High School, Stanford University where he was a member of the tennis team, and Harvard Business School. He then spent time in the army teaching at the Officer’s Training School at Camp Lee, VA. When he returned to Seattle he joined the investment firm of Harold H. Huston and Co. Upon Mr. Huston’s retirement he joined Campbell Waterman, and most recently First Washington Corp.Neil found a lifelong interest in bridge at the early age of eleven filling in at his mother’s games. He was near the level of Platinum Life Master requiring 10,000 master points when he died. He greatly enjoyed his years at the Seattle Tennis Club, the Men’s University Club, and the Mercer Island Beach Club. A memorial service will be held Friday Oct 1 at 1:00 PM at Emmanuel Episcopal Church, 4400 86th Ave SE, Mercer Island. A gathering of family and friends will follow at the Seattle Tennis Club, 922 McGilvra Blvd. E, Seattle, from 3:00 to 5:30.In lieu of flowers, donations may be made at Seattle Children’s Uncompensated Care, Fred Hutchinson CRC or the charity of your choice.
