Mercer Island Rotary has named seniors Samuel Chong and Isabel Christy as the Islanders of the month. Both students attend Mercer Island High School.
Chong is a boys swim team captain at MIHS, where he has been a varsity swimmer for the past three years. He is a Bridges leader, Natural Helper and member of the National Honor Society and Senior Service Club.
In the Mercer Island community, Chong performs music for Covenant Shores residents and volunteers at the Mercer Island Covenant Church as a lighting technician, slides operator and pianist. He is also the president of the Music in the Community Club.
Chong’s hobbies include playing ukulele, guitar and piano; singing; and sailing with the West Vancouver Yacht Club. The son of Dr. Dennis and Sweelin Chong, he plans to double-major in biology and economics at a four-year university and continue on to medical school.
Christy, a captain of the MIHS cross country team, is a marching band drum major and Mercer Island Wind Ensemble clarinetist. She is also the president of the MIHS Outdoors Club.
Her activities in the community include tutoring elementary students, giving private clarinet lessons; and volunteering for Relay for Life and Bird Watch through the Seattle Audubon, doing bird research and community outreach.
Music and outdoor activities are among Christy’s hobbies, including rock climbing, rafting, kayaking and skiing. The daughter of Kevin and Robin Christy, she plans to major in earth sciences or environmental sciences in college.
