Dr. James Thomas Ogilvie, Age 77, passed away peacefully at home on Friday July 11th 2014 with his family at his side. Jim is preceded in death by his mother and father James L. Ogilvie, Freda S. Ogilvie and his brother David A. Ogilvie. He is survived by his wife Susan A. Ogilvie, son Brandon K. Ogilvie, daughter in-law Maureen W. Ogilvie, daughter Andrea K. Ogilvie-Eisler, sister in-law Sheri Ogilvie, grandson Brandt James Eisler and granddaughter Claire W. Ogilvie.

James Thomas Ogilvie was born 7-5-37 to James Law Ogilvie and Freda Schank Ogilvie in Greeley Co, Jim grew up there, in Estes Park and Denver where he graduated from East High. During Jr. High Jim became an Eagle Scout. While a student at East High and later at The University of Colorado where he was active in swimming, diving, gymnastics and graduated as Valedictorian of East High. He was president of his fraternity Sigma Alpha Epsilon and graduated Magna Cum Laude from University of Colorado. In 1959, he entered Harvard Medical School and graduated in 1963. In 1963 Jim moved to Seattle where he started working for the University of Washington to do his internship and residency. He was interning in the ER of Harborview Medical Center when he met Sue who was a social worker there. Jim had been drafted so after their marriage in 1964, they spent 6 weeks in Norway with Sue’s relatives, before they reported for Army duty in San Antonio Texas. Jim was assigned to Korat, Thailand and their son Brandon was born in Bangkok. Jim was a preventative Medicine officer in bases all over Thailand. In Dec 1965, he went back to San Antonio Texas to teach Tropical Medicine at Fort Sam Houston. Their daughter Andrea was born there.

Jim returned to Seattle in Sept 1966 to begin post graduate work in Internal Medicine and Endocrinology. The family settled on Mercer Island and joined the United Methodist Church. While working at Harborview Jim was active in free Medical Clinics and started Pioneer Square Medical Clinic, while there he trained the first Nurse Practitioners. Pioneer Square Medical Clinic is still going to this day. During this time in 1970 the family moved to Montero Bolivia so Jim could teach medical students. After returning from Bolivia Jim was assigned to NW Lipid Research center and helped run a Cholesterol prevention trial that ran for 10 years and concluded that lowering cholesterol reduces heart attacks. When the trial ended in 1982 Jim decided to leave Harborview and the University to go into private practice in Bellevue. Sue managed their office and he combined Internal Medicine with Endocrinology. After 15 successful years he retired in 1999 and went to work for the under writers at Farmers Insurance on Mercer Island with a fantastic commute! In 2011 he began to experience the breathlessness of Pulmonary Fibrosis and retired from Farmers. Jim has been a lifelong birder, able to discern them from sound as well as sight. He has enjoyed camping on trips to Colorado with his family and fishing with his dad. The highlight of his fishing was a 36 lbs Salmon caught in Canada.

Joys in Jim’s life were photographing flowers, music, singing bass in the church choir, teaching adult and high school Sunday school classes, guitar lessons- he played the 12 string, Church Youth group, Men’s prayer group, coaching son Brandon’s baseball team when he was young, running the sidelines for daughter Andrea’s soccer games, listening to Husky, Mariner and Seahawks games. Jim also enjoyed Family vacations to Colorado, Mexico, Hawaii, Cannon Beach, sailing in the San Juan’s and often time at the cabin. He enjoyed sailing lessons and races with his daughter. Fishing trips with his brother and dad in Colorado or down at the cabin. Jim was an avid reader of spy novels, mysteries and loved Westerns. He was a fan of old planes and attended many an airshow with the family, he also was a model airplanes builder and enjoyed flying them too. Jim had a passion for writing and shared some of his wonderful poetry with his family. Most notable about Jim was his unwavering and unconditional giving of his time, thoughts, medical expertise and goodness. In his soft spoken way Jim brought quiet and heart felt love to all who knew him. Spending time with his grandkids Brandt & Claire Ogilvie and they brought great joy, pride, smiles and laughs to Jim. Watching them grow to young adults was defiantly a highlight of life for him.

This year July 4th was Jim and Sue’s 50th wedding Anniversary! Closely followed by Jim’s 77th Birthday on July 5th. Our family feels truly blessed with a long, healthy, happy life together as a family and were equally blessed to have these last few months together as a family at home.

We are grateful to Helping Hands who have provided in home health care for Jim this last year, especially Payo and Dotty who have become part of the family as well as dear friends to Jim. Additionally, Jim was so appreciative of the Tues Telios Men’s Group at Church. Our family would like to extend a special measure of thanks and love to Jim’s dear friend Jim Maners who diligently ministered and shared not only his kind words and friendship but would bake brownies or bring Root beer floats to Jim and the family on a weekly basis.
