Walter Parietti, 89, died December 17, 2016, on Mercer Island, where he lived for 53 years. Born on March 24, 1927, in Seattle, he was the son of Italian immigrants. He graduated from West Seattle High School in 1944 and served in the Army during World War II. He graduated from the University of Washington in 1949 and married Peggy Orthmann on October 22, 1949.
He spent four decades in journalism, working for newspapers in Yakima and Portland before beginning a 30-year career as a Seattle Times sportswriter in 1960. He coached Babe Ruth baseball on Mercer Island and was an active member of St. Monica Parish, where he was a Cub Scout leader and volunteered with the Friends of the Needy.
He is survived by his wife; five children, Jeff, Craig (Debbie), Jean (Will Self), Paul and Bill (Mary); five grandchildren; his sister, Sylvia Halldorson; and numerous nieces and nephews.
