HELEN MARIE TURNEY

Helen M​arie​ Turney passed away on December 13, 2016 in her home on Mercer Island at the age of 96. She was born in Philadelphia, PA, on October 11, 1920 to Hugh Sweeney and Helen Marie (DeHart) Sweeney. Helen’s youth and early adult years were spent in Philadelphia.

She met Hardin (Cotton) L. Turney on a blind date and they were married within a year on September 28, 1945. That same year, Helen and Cotton moved to Seattle. In 1963 the family moved to Mercer Island and she remained there for 53 years until her death.

Helen was an active member of St. Monica’s Catholic Church. She was an avid golfer and made many dear friends in her early golfing years at Jefferson Golf Course in Seattle. In 1980 Helen and her husband joined Glendale Golf and Country Club and were members for 36 years. Helen and Cotton made many good friends through their golfing activities and their social life revolved around these connections. Helen shared 71 years of love and marriage with her husband Hardin L. Turney, who passed away on November 7, 2016.

She is survived by one brother, Hugh Sweeney (Pauline), of Stoneham, MA, a daughter Terese Turney-Ajer and

2 grandchildren, Kerrianne Ajer and Nicholas Ajer (Felicia), all of Seattle.

Her ashes will be interred during a private family service at Holyrood Cemetery in Shoreline, WA. Helen’s beautiful and ebullient spirit will be missed by her family and friends. Remembrances can be made to Providence Hospice of Seattle, 425 Pontius Ave. N. #300, Seattle, WA 98109.
