Overnight snow on Sunday left thousands without power and led to several road closures in the local area.

WEDNESDAY UPDATE:

As of 10 a.m. Wednesday, there is just one known major road closure remaining, at 7200 West Mercer Way. The city is waiting on Puget Sound Energy (PSE) to address powerlines in this problem area. East Mercer Way reopened early this morning, after PSE completed work there.

PSE has about 300 homes yet to reconnect, and many will be tackled today. Check the outage map at www.PSE.com.

Public Works is working on establishing drop-off sites in a few parks for extra yard debris and tree limbs. The city will publicize this when it’s set up with containers and signage. Call Public Works at 206-275-7608 if you know of other blockages or tree debris issues.

Big rains are on the way; residents are asked to clear their stormdrains in preparation.

TUESDAY UPDATE:

As of Tuesday at 11:30 a.m, temperatures were finally warming up and filtered sun appeared. Sand and plow crews are out Island-wide, and debris clean up will begin soon.

The four remaining blockages (in the 5400 block of East Mercer Way, 7200 block of West Mercer Way, 4325 92nd Ave. SE and 50th Place and Southeast 85th Street) are all powerline-related, and therefore the domain of PSE.

Please remember to check on elderly or vulnerable neighbors without power. The Community and Event Center is open today as a warming facility.

Due to recent developments regarding the city’s I-90 Loss of Mobility Negotiations, the City Council is canceling its Feb. 8 meeting and rescheduling it for 7 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 13.

Congressman Adam Smith has stepped in to assist the city by arranging a meeting with Gov. Jay Inslee. This meeting may inform the Council’s decision, so the meeting was postponed.

The council will meet in Executive Session from 5:30-7 p.m. before the Special Meeting on Feb. 13, and is expected to take action following this Executive Session.

The agenda for Monday’s meeting will be posted to the city website by 5 p.m. Thursday.

The annual MIYFS Fundraising Breakfast is still on for tomorrow, starting 7:30 a.m. Due to heavy traffic, the city suggests carpooling (there will be shuttle vans) from the following locations: MI Presbyterian Church, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Mud Bay/King Insurance and Freshy’s Seafood.

Light snow continues in flurries, but expected to become rain by afternoon. A freeze and another snow event of two to three inches is forecasted for tonight. The city expects icy roads tonight and Tuesday morning.

The Regular Business portion of the Feb. 6 City Council Meeting was canceled due to inclement weather, and rescheduled to 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 8. The only item on the agenda was “I-90 Loss of Mobility Negotiations.”

The Mercer Island School District closed all schools and canceled all school-related activities on Monday [and Tuesday] due to due to weather conditions that may affect staff and students. All programs, activities, and building use were canceled.

Plow teams are now able to turn to secondary streets, and the city’s public works and parks maintenance departments currently have crews addressing these problem areas:

East Mercer Way – Multiple blockages, closed from Mercerwood Drive to Southeast 68th Street. Multiple trees and power lines down.

Island Crest Way – Closed at Southeast 45th Street, power line and trees down.

Southeast 68th Street between Island Crest Way and East Mercer Way – Partial lane closure due to tree.

West Mercer Way:

– 8200 Block (tree across both lanes).

– Southeast 58th Street and West Mercer Way – Partial blockage.

North Mercer Way:

– 8600 Block – Partial blockage.

– The 4100 block of 92nd Avenue Southeast block also has a road closure – Tree blockage.

Avoid these areas if possible.

Republic Services has implemented its snow policy, and will not be collecting.
