Millie Lane, a longtime resident of Mercer Island, passed away May 26, 2017 at Zilber Family Hospice in Wauwatosa, WI. She was 88. She was born August 15, 1928 in Henning, MN. She and her family moved to Bremerton, WA when she was 16, where she graduated from Bremerton High School. Millie married Roy Hettich in 1955 and they settled on Mercer Island. She later married another longtime Island resident Les Lane.
A jack-of-all-trades, Millie worked as a grocery clerk at both Tradewell and Mayfair grocery stores on the Island; she sold AVON; was a bookkeeper for the Boeing Employees’ Flying Club at Boeing Field; and retired from the banking industry, having worked for Seattle First National Bank on the Island.
After retiring, she and Les moved to their cabin just outside of Leavenworth, WA, then to Wenatchee. Upon Les’ passing in 1995, Millie moved to Mesa, AZ. It is in Mesa she met her companion of 20+ years, Al Martinez. They moved to Burlington, WI in 2015, to be closer to Al’s daughters.
Millie was preceded in death by her father Henry Schöder, mother Metta, stepfather Harry Norton, sisters Adeline, Doris and LaVilla, her brother Arnie, her beloved husband Les, and her loving companion Al. She is survived by her sister LaVerne, son Randy Hettich (MI class of ‘77), daughter-in-law Linda, grandson Quinn, and numerous nieces and nephews whom she loved dearly.
Millie will be remembered for her friendly nature, her warm smile and her infectious laugh.
