Boys golf edges Bellevue
With four of its golfers placing in the day’s top five finishers, Mercer Island boys golf earned its third-straight match win Thursday, edging Bellevue 185-187 at Twin Rivers Golf Course.
Seven of Mercer Island’s ten golfers shot under 40 strokes for the day. Will Mansfield finished the front nine with 35 strokes to lead the Islanders, while Bligh Bjarnason, Ryan Nguyen and Brendan Yan all shot 37.
Mercer Island will take on Liberty Monday, Sept. 29 at Maplewood Golf Course.
Girls swim tops Inglemoor
Mercer Island girls swim and dive won its meet with Inglemoor 130-55 Thursday at Mary Wayte Pool, with Mercer Island swimmers taking 10 of the day’s 12 events.
The relay team of Kristin Jradi, Sofija Raisys, Maeve Murdoch and Heather Robinson started things off, winning the 200-yard medley relay. Leah Fisk won the 200-yard freestyle and 500-yard freestyle, Leann Tse won the 200-yard IM, Hadley Michaels won the diving event and Sabrina Kwan won the 100-yard freestyle.
The relay team of Sammie Edwards, Raisys, Fisk and Kwan won the 200-yard freestyle relay, Audrey Hixon took the 100-yard backstroke, Raisys took the 100-yard breaststroke and the relay team of Fisk, Kwan, Hixon and Murdoch won the 400-yard freestyle relay.
Next up, Mercer Island hosts Juanita at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 2 at Mary Wayte Pool.
Girls soccer suffers first KingCo loss
A first-half goal from Lake Washington’s Taylor Sekyra lifted the Kangs to a 1-0 win over Mercer Island girls soccer Thursday night at Lake Washington High School. The Islanders dropped to 2-1 in KingCo competition and 4-2-1 on the year. The girls soccer team will host Sammamish at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 30 at MIHS.
Volleyball sweeps Juanita
Mercer Island volleyball cruised past Juanita in three sets Thursday night at Juanita High School, winning 25-12, 25-12 and 25-15. Kelly Behrbaum had 10 kills for the Islanders, while Caroline Hamilton posted 8 kills, 2 aces and 3 digs, Olivia Hughes had 5 kills, 2 aces, a block and 7 digs and Brooke Behrbaum had 4 kills, 2 aces and a block. Mercer Island takes on Sammamish at 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 29 at at MIHS.
