Approximately $2,000 in coins and bills collected over 20 years was stolen from a residence in the 2700 block of 68th Avenue S.E. sometime after Aug. 11. The family collected the money in a red Crayola crayon container. No other items were stolen, and there is no suspect information. The theft was reported on Aug. 22.
Aug. 19
Theft: Someone stole a 27-year-old Mercer Island woman’s check, purse, video projector and camera in the 9000 block of West Shorewood Drive sometime between July 12 and Aug. 12. The total loss was $2,680. The theft was reported at 8:14 a.m.
Bike theft: A Mercer Island teen’s bike, worth $1,200, was stolen from the park and ride on North Mercer Way sometime after 9:20 a.m. on Aug. 18. The bike was attached to the rack with a key lock and cable. It was discovered missing at 9:10 p.m.
Aug. 22
Malicious mischief: A locked mailbox in the 4000 block of 91st Avenue S.E. was damaged by an unknown object. The owner did not know if mail was taken.
Fender-bender: A 25-year-old man was cited for tailgating in the 4200 block of Island Crest Way after he rear-ended a vehicle that was stopping for a pedestrian in a crosswalk at 11:14 a.m. Two witnesses were present.
Arrest: Police arrested a 29-year-old Seattle woman at 11:40 a.m. on a Kirkland Police Department $1,500 warrant for driving with a suspended license. She was transferred into Kirkland police custody and her vehicle was impounded.
Car prowl: A 37-year-old Mercer Island man reported that his vehicle registration and cell phone charger were stolen out of his vehicle sometime after Aug. 7.
Aug. 24
Assault: A 21-year-old man assaulted his father, 50, in the 7600 of West Mercer Way at 11:28 a.m. Both men blamed the other as the aggressor, and both had minor visible injuries. Police arrested the son after determining him to be the primary aggressor, and recovered a smoking pipe from the victim’s garage.
Theft: A backpack containing a laptop and other items was stolen from the park and ride on North Mercer Way between 2:30 and 3 p.m. The owner forgot his backpack when he boarded a bus to his parents’ house. He went back to get it, but someone stole it in the meantime.
Aug. 25
Accident: A collision occurred in the intersection of West Mercer Way and Merrimount Drive when a vehicle attempted a left-hand turn and was struck by an oncoming vehicle northbound on West Mercer. The 56-year-old driver who made the turn was cited for failing to yield the right of way. A witness observed the accident from the second floor of his home at the corner of the intersection.
Car prowl: Someone entered a Ford Aerostar left locked with its windows cracked open in the south Luther Burbank Park lot between 12:45 and 1:15 p.m. When the owner, a 64-year-old Seattle man, returned from swimming he found that $450 in cash had been stolen from a pair of jeans inside the vehicle. Nothing else was stolen.
Malicious mischief: A mailbox was smashed in the 6800 block of 93rd Avenue S.E. after 11 p.m. The owner, a 48-year-old man, found the damaged mailbox lying in the middle of the street after hearing a loud noise outside and observing two teens talking inside a minivan, which sped off. His wife had just reinstalled the mailbox earlier that day. It was smashed twice within four days and the couple did not know who was doing the damage, which totaled $50.
Aug. 26
Drugs: Police arrested a 17-year-old male at night in the 4000 block of Island Crest Way for possessing marijuana, after pulling him over for a nonfunctioning taillight. Police detected an odor of marijuana inside and impounded the vehicle after the driver refused to have his vehicle searched. Police found marijuana in the center console after obtaining a search warrant.
Burglary: Jewelry, games and an XBox were stolen out of a residence in the 4600 block of 86th Avenue S.E. between 10 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. The burglar(s) might have entered through an unlocked door.
Vehicle impounded: Police impounded a vehicle blocking a driveway in the 4200 block of 89th Avenue S.E. at 7 p.m. near Mercer Island High School, where a football game was in progress. Three announcements were made during the game, but the vehicle was not moved. It was registered to a Kirkland resident.
Aug. 27
Attempted burglary: An unknown suspect tried to forcefully open a window screen at a residence in the 7100 block of 78th Avenue S.E. but was not able to enter.
