Gudmund Brynjulv Berge died peacefully on June 20, 2018 in Seattle, Washington at the age of 91 after just returning from a trip with family members to his ancestral homeland, Norway.

Gudmund is survived by his children: Mark of Clifton, NJ; Anne McIntosh (Larry) of Sammamish, WA; Matt (Wendi) of Prosper, TX; Rolfe of San Francisco, CA; and grandchildren Jordan, Kyle, Brynna, and Hayden. He is preceded in death by his parents, David & Marie; beloved wife Shirley; and brothers Erling & Nils.

Gudmund was born on July 23, 1926 in Seattle, Washington to David & Marie, two years after they emigrated from Norway and settled in Magnolia. He graduated from University of Washington in 1950 with a degree in Architecture and was an accomplished architect and founding partner of Mandeville Berge Box, Architects & Engineers. He met his future wife at his cousin Margaret Price’s wedding rehearsal, marrying her in 1955 and staying happily married 58 years until her death in 2013.

Gudmund and Shirley moved into their longtime home on Mercer Island in 1961, where they raised their four children and enjoyed spectacular views of Lake Washington, the Blue Angels, endless picnics and highly competitive badminton games. Family activities and travel were a priority in the family, and all kept busy with snow skiing, tennis, camping, hiking and traveling to numerous destinations. Gudmund and Shirley instilled their love of travel and adventure to their children and grandchildren, with cherished annual family reunions each summer and vacations abroad.

Gudmund and Shirley sold their Mercer Island home and moved into Aljoya in 2011, where they were welcomed with open arms to the Aljoya family, and thoroughly enjoyed all the various activities, close sense of community and strong friendship bonds. Never one to sit still, Gudmund was also an active member of the Cascade Lodge Sons of Norway and other organizations. With his warmth, kindness and sense of humor, Gudmund had the ability to connect and have meaningful conversations with everyone he met, and he will be greatly missed.

A celebration of Gudmund’s life is scheduled for 2 p.m. on July 14th at Aljoya, 2430 76th Avenue SE, Mercer Island. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Gudmund’s life.
