My name is Will Goodwin, and I am a student at Mercer Island High School and a member of the Committee for Mercer Island Public Schools (CMIPS). Although I am not eligible to vote in the upcoming school levy election on Feb. 9, I am writing to encourage others to vote yes for Mercer Island schools. The three levies on the ballot directly benefit MISD students and deserve the support of all Islanders.

Sustaining academic and athletic programs, maintaining class periods, improving buildings and integrating technology all depend upon the passage of these levies.

Like other school districts across the country, MISD is facing difficult budget cuts due to the floundering economy. Without the passage of these levies, staff, specialized learning programs, and athletic and art programs will be cut or dramatically reduced — negatively impacting a large number of MISD students.

I rely upon taking a full schedule of seven classes to fulfill graduation requirements and enjoy elective classes. The state only provides funding for a five-period schedule. Levies fund the two additional periods, which students like myself desperately need.

Already over capacity, MISD’s buildings are not prepared for the expected increase in enrollment over the next 10 years. MIHS’s band room only offers one square foot of space per musician. The levies provide for additional classrooms and specifically mention the band room.

In today’s technology-driven world, our students need technology available to complete normal coursework and keep up with students around the globe. The state, however, does not provide any funding for technology. Luckily, the capital levy includes a telephone system replacement, district network upgrade, and PC replacements. This election matters! The three levies will immediately benefit current and future MISD students. Please mark three yes votes for schools.
