MIHS water polo splits week before spring break
The girls water polo team from MIHS split their last contests before spring break, losing to Shorewood and beating Roosevelt.
On Tuesday, March 23, the team traveled to face Shorewood and lost 4-2. Senior Stephanie Hammond had the Islanders’ only goals.
On Wednesday, March 25, the Islanders hosted Roosevelt in their first home game of the season. Mercer Island won 13-4 over the Roughriders.
Starting off exactly the opposite of their game against Shorewood, the Islanders put up five goals in the first quarter, followed by three in the second. In the second half, Mercer Island had four goals in the third, and added the final point in the last quarter. Roosevelt had two points in the first half and attempted to make a final offensive push in the fourth to earn two points.
Hammond scored eight points during the contest, while senior Rachel Frank and junior Emma Nelson had scored a point. Junior Alyssa Weed had three points during the game.
The Islanders will play in the Spring Siesta at the King County Aquatic Center, April 2-4.
Softball falls to Garfield
The Mercer Island girls softball team was handed a large defeat by Garfield on March 25 when the team lost 24-7 at home. The Islanders quickly faced a 10-4 deficit after the first two innings and couldn’t find their way back out, even after scoring two more runs in the third. Garfield went on a streak, posting 12 more runs in the fourth and fifth innings before the game was called.
The Islanders will host Bellevue on April 6 at 4:30 p.m. at the South Mercer Playfields.
