The Mercer Island Police Department (MIPD) confirmed today (July 28) that the Island’s Marine Patrol responded this morning to a seaplane crash near Hunts Point.

The Seattle Police Marine Unit accompanied Mercer Island’s Marine Patrol.

The pilot of the seaplane was alone, and crashed at around 7:45 a.m.

It’s likely that the seaplane crashed because its pilot put the wheels down while trying to land on the water, MIPD confirmed. When the wheels contacted the water, the plane flipped.

The pilot sustained minor injuries. Mercer Island Det. Sgt. Jim Robarge said that the pilot was evaluated by responding fire personnel at the time of the incident. To his knowledge, the pilot was not hospitalized. Robarge said it was unknown whether the pilot sought additional medical treatment following his assessment.

Robarge said in a follow-up call around 2 p.m. Tuesday that responders were currently waiting for a salvage company to attend to the wreckage.

The plane, per a KIRO 7 update, is registered with CLY Aviation, which is based out of Bellevue.
