Officers reported there was an overwhelming smell of substance and the intoxicated youths were vomiting repeatedly. The parents said they would take the youth for medical care.

Police responded to a call at 8:07 p.m. March 14 from the 4100 block of East Mercer Way. The witness reported seeing four juveniles drive by with some sort of pellet gun or BB rifle. Mercer Island police saw the vehicle, a four-door, white, 1982 Mercedes Benz, parked alongside the road. The officer noted a strong smell of marijuana. A search recovered a small plastic bag with substance that later tested positive for marijuana. The report was forwarded for criminal investigation.

A bicycle police officer stopped the vehicle after he saw the 19-year-old male drive his black, 2002 Honda Accord through the intersection. After failing a breathalyzer test, the teen admitted to drinking whisky prior to operating the vehicle. He was transported to the Mercer Island police station and released into his father’s custody.

Police went to the young man’s home in the 4700 block of 91st Street S.E., where he denied being involved in the incident. His mother refused to cooperate with police or allow them to talk to the 17-year-old suspect. The case was forwarded to Criminal Investigation Services’ detectives for follow-up.

In a separate incident on March 11, an Island resident turned over to police a videotape of mail theft occurring last month at a mailbox in the 4300 block of Forest Avenue. A resident had suspected someone was stealing his mail and set up a video camera to record his mailbox while he was out of town. The video recorded two vehicles, a light-colored Volvo and a dark sedan, stopping at the box and the driver of one vehicle taking pieces of junk mail the victim had placed in the box. Police are investigating the incident.
