Led by first-place finishes from Piper Enge and Brooke Andrews, Mercer Island High School’s girls swim and dive squad snagged the 3A KingCo championship over the weekend of Oct. 29-30.

Enge set meet records in the 200-yard freestyle (1:51.68) and 500-yard freestyle (5:00.05) and Andrews won the diving competition with 442.15 points. Enge broke her own one-day records from the prelims (1:53.37 in the 200 and 5:03.44 in the 500). Enge and Andrews are individual state title contenders in their respective events, according to the team’s site.

In the team standings, Mercer Island notched 320 points, followed by Bellevue with 266 and Lake Washington with 239.

The two-day event took place at Hazen High (swimming) and Lindbergh High (diving).

MI’s Mayuko Tobaru and CJ Woare earned the Islanders’ gold caps, and Woare grabbed her first state cut in the 500 free at prelims (5:19.08).

Enge and Andrews were named first-team all-Kingco; Amelia Han, Isabel Peng, Woare and Cecilia Sommerfield were named to the second team, and Austin Whelan and Charlotte Friedman were honorable mention.

DISTRICT SUCCESS

At the Sea-King District 2 meet on Nov. 5-6 at Hazen and Lindbergh, Mercer Island placed second in the team standings.

Andrews won the diving title with 447.90 points and Enge triumped in the 200-yard individual medley (2:03.14) and 100-yard breaststroke (1:01.68). Enge’s 100 breast mark is a school and district record and was announced as the second fastest time in state history. Her 200 IM prelims time was 2:02.60 and her 100 breast prelims mark was 1:02.46, which was a district record at that time.

State will take place on Nov. 12-13 at the King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way.
