Mercer Island’s boys cross country squad placed ninth at the 3A state cross country championships on Nov. 6 at Sun Willows Golf Course in Pasco.

In the 5,000-meter race, Ryan Koopman was the Islanders’ top finisher in 21st place (16:43.50), followed by Owen Powell in 40th (17:02.30) and Carson Schiller in 51st (17:13.50). Kai Zettel, Brooks Enge, Clark Koopman and Alex Levin completed the local squad.

On the girls’ side Sophia Fan and Karen Zhang also participated in the state meet.

Mercer Island’s volleyball squad finished fourth in the 3A KingCo playoff tournament and advances to the Sea-King District tournament that begins on Nov. 10.
