VFW Post 5760 members make donation to food pantry

Mercer Island VFW Post 5760 representative Robert Harper recently presented Marina Gonzales, Mercer Island Youth and Family Services (MIYFS) programs assistant and thrift shop supervisor, with $1,000 worth of QFC food gift cards for distribution through the food pantry.

The VFW members voted at their last meeting to make this donation, and the hope is that this will make a Mercer Island family’s holiday a little more enjoyable. Many VFW members remember their deployed status over numerous holidays and take pride in helping make this time of year gratifying for others.

The VFW was able to double its contribution this year because the post, which is a historical building across from the Roanoke Inn, is now available for rental after being shut down due to COVID-19 restrictions.

During the shutdown, a major renovation was undertaken. The kitchen was remodeled, and all the stoves, dishwashers, ovens and sinks were replaced along with new flooring, counters and cabinets. A variety of rentals from wedding receptions, birthdays, life celebrations, etc., are the revenue source for the post and provide for veterans’ relief, support for the VFW National Home for Children, the Marines Toys for Tots program and local donations such as MIYFS.

The Mercer Island VFW post encourages others to donate to the MIYFS food bank. It is a very worthy cause.
