Mercer Island High School (MIHS) students Emily Porter and Andrew Yeh have been named the December Rotary Islanders of the Month.
Alma Parness of the MIHS Spanish Department nominated Porter for the honor, noting that she possesses a diligent and positive attitude in class and is passionate for social justice. Porter’s class schedule includes advanced placement Spanish and honors English to go along with serving as the Associated Student Body secretary and drill team member.
Outside of school, she’s a certified skiing instructor and works with senior citizens, kids and adults with disabilities and limited mobility through the Outdoors for All Foundation in Snoqualmie.
Instructor Curtis Johnston nominated Yeh and said he is an outstanding student and excellent ambassador for the Mercer Island School District. During last year’s COVID online instruction model and later in the hybrid schedule, he came to class prepared and energized each day and provided insights and delivered top quality work.
Yeh is member of the school band and holds leadership positions in the National League of Young Men, where he has already completed enough service hours to qualify for a school district service award.
