Mercer Island High School seniors Gabe Davis and Julia Zook were named the Rotary Islanders of May.

Davis is the Relay for Life team captain at MIHS, where he is also a member of the tennis team, of which he was the business manager in 2009. He also played lacrosse and intramural basketball, and ran cross country. His community activities include maintenance at the Mercer Island Country Club and work with Pic Assurance, VOICE, Saferides, the Mercer Island Farmers Market, Invest in Youth tutoring program and PLIT. Along with fellow senior Matthew Sedlacek, Davis has proposed lighting for the MIHS tennis court as a tribute to the late Joyce Hedlund. The idea to honor former coach Hedlund through installing the lighting was born in November 2009, and since then Davis has brought the proposal to the school district, City of Mercer Island and School Board. He has also garnered support from Musco Lighting LLC, Puget Sound Energy and the Mercer Island Schools Foundation, among others, in addition to a $1,000 grant from the Mercer Island Community Fund. The son of Nathan and Carol Davis, he plans to attend the University of Puget Sound, where he will pursue business, political science, marketing and entrepreneurship in economics.

Zook is the captain of the varsity tennis team at MIHS, a band member, Bridges leader, National Honor Society member and participant in the International Festival and hosting French students. Her community activities include tutoring at the Jubilee Reach Center; volunteering at churches, including outreach service days, baking cookies for prisoners and preparing Thanksgiving meals; and judging at the West Mercer Elementary science fair. In her spare time, she manages her own jewelry business, Jewelia’s, and performs ballet. The daughter of Chris and Meg Zook, she plans to attend the United States Naval Academy.
