Carol Wales, of Seattle, died Wednesday, Nov. 24, 2021. She was 93 years of age.
She was born on July 20, 1928, in New Rochelle, New York, the youngest of four children to Lewis C. and Lena McClement Pounds. She grew up in New Rochelle and spent many happy summers in Westhampton, Long Island where her Uncle Artie named her “Flea” after the pesky sand flea of the Long Island beaches.
She graduated high school from The Putney School in Vermont, attended Reed College in Portland, Oregon and graduated from Wheelock College in Boston earning her teaching degree in elementary education and taught primary grades in Connecticut and in Kelso, Washington.
An introduction of a friend’s twin brother resulted in marriage to David W. Wales of Abington, Massachusetts in 1952. They eventually settled on Mercer Island in 1955 where they raised four children.
She was always involved with her children’s schools, Girl Scouts, youth sports, and church programs as a parent volunteer. She went back to teaching at the Bush School in Seattle and retired after teaching there for 27 years. She touched us all with her passion for family gatherings, teaching, exploring, and learning about different cultures. She loved to travel highlighted by trips to Europe with her daughter Polly and sister Peggy and to the east and west coasts to visit extended family members. She also took many kayak and rafting trips throughout the San Juan Islands, western US states, and Mexico.
She is survived by daughter Robbie Counsellor (Randy), sons Scott Wales, and Doug Wales (Vicki) along with grandchildren Whitney Green (Brian), Cannon Counsellor, Sean Wales (Bailey), Brooke Granstrom (Colby), Beau Wales (Dom), Tyler Wales (Alyssa), and great granddaughter Anna Granstrom. Also surviving are her outlaws MaryLee Wales and Betsy Wales along with numerous loving nieces and nephews that she adored.
She is preceded in death by her loving daughter Polly Wales Green, brothers Artie and Lewie and sister Peggy and their spouses. We miss you Mom and find comfort that you are now with Polly and all your loved ones.
A celebration of Carol’s life will be held from 11am to 3pm, with words of remembrance at 11:30am, on Sunday, February 13, 2022 at Wisteria Hall in the Washington Park Arboretum, 2300 Arboretum Drive East, Seattle, WA 98112
