Fly the flags for community art project

In recent weeks, children and adults’ printed colorful patterns — made with fruits and vegetables — have been hanging from the trees bordering Mercerdale Park as part of the Community Flags Art Project presented by the Mercer Island Visual Arts League (MIVAL). The flags came to life at Summer Celebration on July 9 and others can participate in the project by picking up a flag at the MIVAL Gallery from noon to 6 p.m. Wednesday-Saturday and noon to 4 p.m. Sunday in the Avellino Building at 2836 78th Ave. SE. The project is supported by the city of Mercer Island and the Mercer Island Community Fund. Also on tap for MIVAL this summer is its 48th annual Junior Art Show from July 18-Sept. 9 at the Mercer Island Community and Event Center, 8236 SE 24th St. Hours are from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday–Thursday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday-Saturday. A reception and awards ceremony for the artists will take place at 11 a.m. July 23. Andy Nystrom/ staff photos
