Mercer Island Marine Patrol was one of five agencies that provided assistance on the scene of a fatal wakeboarding accident on Lake Washington on the evening of Oct. 11. A 42-year-old male from Seattle was struck by the boat that was towing him and died, according to a city of Mercer Island press release.
Police and fire units were dispatched at about 4:35 p.m. to the 4300 block of Hunts Point Road for a reported injured person in the water, about 100 yards from shore. The man was wakeboarding off a 22-foot ski boat, which was being operated by a 24-year-old male from Seattle.
The Mercer Island and Seattle marine patrols, along with the Bellevue and Kirkland fire departments and Medina police, responded to assist.
“While the incident is still under investigation, officers found no signs of impairment by the boat’s operator,” reads the press release.
The Mercer Island Police Department is the primary investigating agency working with the King County Medical Examiner’s Office to determine the cause and manner of death. The medical examiner will contact the family of the victim.
