Beth Christofferson’s first-grade class at Northwood Elementary worked together to support the Mary’s Place Holiday Giving Program. This effort helped bring to life current learning in the classroom as students completed a literacy unit from the newly adopted Benchmark Advance literacy curriculum: Unit 3 Being a Good Community Member. Students worked to understand the unit’s essential question: Why do people get involved in their communities? Each year, Mary’s Place counts on community members to ensure that the Seattle nonprofit organization’s kids and parents can celebrate the joy of the holiday season and share gifts with each other. Its mission is to ensure “that no child sleeps outside by centering equity and opportunity for women and families.” Northwood staff donated additional items during a previous drive for Mary’s Place.
