Celebrating Island students’ art

Special to the Reporter

The Mercer Island Visual Arts League (MIVAL) has awarded this year’s high school art scholarships to six deserving visual arts students. The scholarship program has existed for almost 50 years and recognizes high school artists who have achieved success in their disciplines and intend to continue their art studies in college. We thank local artists and Mercer Island residents for contributing to the scholarship fund every year to make these awards possible.

This year, MIVAL recognizes juniors Joyce Li, Karen Zhang and Maria Zhang, and seniors Cora Meredith, Kristin Smoots and Alana Taitague. Their work is on display at the MIVAL High School Scholarship Show at the MIVAL Gallery until the end of the month so please stop by and have a look. The MIVAL Gallery is at 2836 78th Ave. SE, next to the north end QFC.

MIVAL is also sponsoring the annual Junior Art Show and entries are due soon. This is the 49th annual show to celebrate young artists in grades K-12 with awards and a show for all entrants. For more information and to enter, go to: www.mival.org/jr-art-show
